Vietnam's Director of the Directorate of Fisheries said in 2020 the country would aim to gross close to $10 billion from exporting seafood and aquatic products, an increase of 6.3% compared with 2019. In 2019, export turnover is estimated at $8.6bn, reports Vietnam News.

In 2020, output of fisheries products is expected to reach 8.2 million metric tons, an increase of 0.6% compared with 2019, Tran Dinh Luan.

Vietnam forecasts pangasius fish output of 1.42m metric tons – the same volume in 2019 – and shrimp output at 850,000t, up 3.7%.

For pangasius fish, the farming area is estimated to have reached 6,600 hectares in 2019, up 22% against 2018. Export turnover is forecast at $1.9bn for 2019.

In 2019, the breeding area for brackish shrimp was estimated at 720,000 hectares, while the output reached 750,000t.

Deputy minister of agriculture and rural development, Phung Duc Tien, said the fisheries sector needs to address some shortcomings, such as fishing port infrastructure, processing facilities, and logistics services. He added it would focus on granting certification to brackish shrimp farms (tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp), pangasius fish farms and aquaculture in cages.
