Russia's smaller wild salmon harvest is expected to cause a 2% decline in the country's seafood output to 4.94 million metric tons, reports Urdu Point.
According to Ilya Shestakov, the head of the Russian Federal agency for fisheries, Rosrybolovstvo, production of pink and chum salmon in Russia's Far East fell short of 2018's record year, although production was higher than historical lows. In 2018, Russia produced 5.03m metric tons of seafood.
"Although it [the catch of salmon] was high this year compared to the lean years, it still saw a decrease in comparison with 2018," said Shestakov.
However, catch of pelagic fish, including mackerel, saury and Far Eastern sardine, increased 32% compared with 2018 to more than 200,000t. Meanwhile, aquaculture production also grew, according to the official.
"The increase [in farming of aquatic products] came to almost 36%, to 202,000t, in the first three quarters of the year. But it is the fourth quarter that matters the most, so we expect the results to be not bad," Shestakov said.
