Jin's Sushi Seafood & Bar, a new restaurant featuring "endless" sushi for a set price in an upscale setting, is open near 76th and Layton in Greenfield.
The restaurant is at 7401 W. Barnard Ave., in a completely renovated former Outback Steakhouse building. It debuted Thursday.
Jin's has high-end finishes such as granite and marble, a hand-painted 25-foot mural, a double waterfall behind the bar and sleek tanks for the live lobsters. The architect was Gerald Holasek, and restaurant partner Jessie Jin decorated the space.
"Seafood is our strong point," Jin said. The restaurant has fresh oysters and also carries live scallops, sea urchins and lobsters, unusual for sushi restaurants in the area.
"That’s why we have the live-lobster tank," Jin said. "I want to show (customers) that.”
A business partner has a seafood trading company that ships from New York to Minnesota every week, she said, which makes the live seafood feasible.
Jin said she grew up eating fish and seafood in Qingdao, a city that's on the sea in China's Shandong Province and known for its Tsingtao beer.
"My city is full of beer and seafood and joy, especially in summer," she said, and she wanted to re-create some of that feeling in her restaurant.
Diners can order items a la carte from the menu, such as any of the 22 house sushi rolls, or opt for "endless" sushi, which is $16.99 at lunch (served until 3 p.m. Monday to Friday) and $24.99 at dinner.
The endless meal can include nigiri and one seafood option, such as steamed snow crab; some seafood, such as lobster, is $5 extra.
Appetizers ($3.95 to $9.95 a la carte) at Jin's include hamachi collar, vegetable spring rolls and shrimp shumai.
House sushi rolls ($13 to 16 a la carte) include the Fire Phoenix: crab, avocade and cucumber draped with torched salmon and topped with tobiko and a spicy sauce.
The a la carte menu items are meant to be shared, Jin said (but if ordering the endless option, everyone at the table must order the endless meal before sharing).
Jin's has eight draft lines, for Japanese, craft and macro brews, pours sake and wine, and mixes cocktails. House cocktails include a matcha Mai Tai and lychee martini.
The restaurant can seat about 200 altogether, at 40 or so tables (including a large communal table) and at the sushi bar and cocktail bar. It can book large private parties up to 100, and Jin's takes reservations at (414) 616-1766 for parties of 7 or more in the dining room.
Jin in 2018 opened Lovers Lane Sushi and Seafood Buffet in Franklin, which she described as more of a family-style restaurant. The new restaurant in Greenfield also is family friendly — high chairs are available — but is geared to be more upscale, with table service. (Diners choosing endless sushi check off what they want on a list provided at the table.)
Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 to 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Jin's accepts takeout orders by phone; online ordering is coming later.
