Oasthouse Kitchen + Bar and District Kitchen chef Amir Hajimaleki is opening two restaurants in the old building formerly belonging to brewery and restaurant North by Northwest on 5701 West Slaughter Lane in South Austin. One is a brand-new seafood restaurant by the name of Keepers, pegged to open in late spring or early summer of 2020, and the second is another location of Oasthouse, set for fall 2020.
Keepers will focus on local and sustainable seafood. Potential dishes include king crab rolls, grilled seafood or seafood fried in cornmeal, ceviches, and fries topped with shrimp etouffee and pimento cheese. For non-seafood dishes, there will be Juicy Lucy burgers (the patty is stuffed with cheese) and po’ boys.
Drinks will be overseen by Oasthouse/District beverage director Zach Sasser. Hajimaleki teased cocktails made with rum and agave, as well as beer.
The name of the seafood restaurant, Keepers, comes from the Port Aransas pier where Hajimaleki often goes fishing. He’s teaming up with chef and mentor Rene Melendes, who will oversee Keeper’s daily operations.
As for the second location of Oasthouse, expect the same New American menu with items like carnitas poutine, deviled eggs with pimento cheese, schnitzels, and Rueben egg rolls, plus desserts from Netflix baking competition show-winner Dennis Van. Drinks from Sasser will include beer, beer cocktails, and whiskeys.
Hajimaleki is keeping busy. He announced his intentions in opening Persian restaurant Roya, but that has been pushed back to 2021. Until then, he’ll preview the restaurant through pop-up meals and events.
Hajimaleki opened District Kitchen in Circle C in 2013, followed by Oasthouse in 2015 in the northwest Austin area, and then a second District Kitchen in 2018 in North Shoal Creek.
The South Austin location of North by Northwest closed in January 2019. The original location in Stonelake remains open.
